We headed off on a gray day toward the alps. It was a beautiful drive despite the weather, and we stopped for lunch halfway up the mountain at a tiny café.
From there it was switchbacks up the mountan to the top of the Semnoz ski area, where there is a viewpoint. Sadly it was still seriously fogged in, so no view of Mont Blanc.
Back down the mountain we went and visited Annecy, which sits between large cliffs at the base of a beautiful lake. The town itself is very old and charming, with a cathedral overlooking the lake, and below a canal leading off the lake past the famous “Palais de l’Isle”.
From the old city we walked down to the lake itself, where we happened upon an old mahogany tour boat about to set off, so we grabbed the last two seats for a half hour tour. The lake itself is gorgeous, surrounded by cliffs. It’s quite deep but the water was still very warm in October, around 19º C. Flying near the cliffs we saw a paraglider. Apparently in high season there are many, many more. Then as we were headed back our wake was used by a pump-foiler to scoot along behind for about a kilometer. Very cool!
After our boat ride we walked back into town and had an early dinner of cheese fondue (what else?) and then drove back down to Miserieux.
Ben has fallen in love with the little town in the mountains. We shall see what comes of that!
