Another week with a trip to the beach across the Tagus, and random wanderings.
The ferry dropped us off in Trafaria and we walked to the beach from there, passing near the grain silos and through a very poor section of the village. The beach itself was very pretty, but it was extremely windy and not really worth even wetting our toes. So we had lunch, walked out on the breakwater (getting our legs sandblasted in the process) and went home.
From the ferry we saw that the avenue behind Torre Belém was lined with jacarandas in full bloom, so Ben went out to visit the Jardim Ducla Soares at the upper end of the avenue. The statue there is a bit off-putting — the poor fellow (Saint Constable) looks like he’s committing harakiri, but he is simply accepting Christianity.
In preparation for our upcoming bike trip we headed up the hill to a bike shop for some equipment that they didn’t have in stock (turned out we didn’t need it anyway). On the way back home we detoured into the Rio Seco area that we’d driven through in an Uber a week or two earlier. There are these ancient lime kilns in the rocks there which were apparently used again after the 1755 earthquake. In addition there are murals from the 2024 Female Graffiti Festival. We’d met one of the artists — from Spain, but now living in London — when we toured the B-MAD museum, and we found one of her works.
At the end of the week we went out to dinner at a very nice Nepalese restaurant called Darshan Nepal 2, where the food was as flavorful as it was colorful. On the walk home we saw the “Dinner In The Sky” in action, quite amusing.
