The Cité de Carcassonne at dusk — the end of the ride.

The final riding day — all the way to Carcassonne, and another scorcher predicted. Early start again. We arranged that Norbert would meet us at a patisserie most of the way there and we’d take the van into the city.

A very pretty ride down the locks of the Canal du Midi, passing through several small towns. To make good time before the heat peaked, we cranked the eBikes up and averaged over 20 km/h. When we reached the patisserie in Pennautier we were ahead of schedule, so after a snack we pushed on and finished the last 10 km ourselves.

We rolled into Carcassonne and found our hotel — from which we had a direct view of the legendary fortified medieval Cité. And wow. Norbert arrived with Deb and Randal shortly after.

We thanked Norbert and said our goodbyes after he’d packed away the bikes (he had to be back in Bordeaux the next morning). After a rest, the four of us went out for a final dinner together at Brasserie 4 Temps, and then spent the evening admiring the Cité lit up against the dark sky.
