We took a couple of days to drive down to Ayamonte, Spain, which is at the very southwest corner of the country, directly across the Guadiana river from Portugal. We were visiting Thomas, a friend of Kathy’s family who had worked with her father at IBM, and his partner, Connie. Ayamonte is a pretty little fishing town, very close to the Isla Canela (Cinnamon Island) with very pretty beaches. It’s an hour different from Spain, which makes it amusing to cross the bridge back and forth and figure out when lunch might be.
Thomas and Connie greeted us with a loverly barbecue on their rooftop, from which we enjoyed the views. Our hotel was also on a hill above the 1991 bridge to Portugal, so we enjoyed those views, as well.
We spent time on the beaches, took a hike through the woods even though it was quite warm, and had some very nice meals, sampling the famous Iberian hams and eating at an excellent restaurant called LPA The Culinary Bar.
It was a short trip, but packed full of great conversation with lovely people.
