Down to Lisbon on a slightly delayed flight from Barcelona, then a long wait at the Eurocar counter — the kind of wait where you start mentally adjusting the rest of the day — before finally getting on the road to Portimão. The AirBnB sits very near the beach, with the kind of view that takes the edge off the day. Dinner that first night was at the Irish Rover, which is exactly as Portuguese as it sounds. Nobody was complaining.

Friday we had eggs and tea at home, drove to the supermarket and the farmer’s market (a bit late for the latter), a salad lunch, a long walk on the beach, and home to cook. Chicken and leeks for dinner.

Saturday added a walk out to the lighthouse, a crêpes lunch where the service was glacial enough to recalibrate our expectations of “lunch,” a nap, and a walk to the overlook at the western end of Praia da Rocha. Salad for dinner — we ate well at midday even though it took a bit longer than expected.

Late April in the Algarve means wildflowers everywhere — along the cliffs, in every patch of scrubland, tumbling over stone walls. We took enough plant and flower photos to warrant their own album.
