Around Lisbon Week 1

We spent time exploring our neighborhood and re-exploring Lisbon. We walked a lot, but also took some Ubers, and the occasional tram and metro. We had hoped to visit the viewpoint at the top of the Elevador de Santa Justa, but it was closed because the elevator itself is undergoing maintenance. But we still had a good time.

We happened to see that a student big band was performing at the Centro Cultural de Belém, just down the road from us, so we decided to check it out. It happened that our landlord and family joined us. The band led off with Sing Sing Sing (with a Swing) and jazzed up the place through the whole concert. They featured a young trombonist who also played a miked-up tuba through a bunch of electronics to spice up the performance.

Wednesday we went out to dinner with ex-pat friends who moved from near us in Lexington, MA several years ago. We had a fine dinner on the river at the Clube Naval de Lisboa restaurant and learned the ins and outs of living in the area. They also gave us tickets to a performance by Corsican a capella group, A Filetta, at the Gulbenkian Auditorium for the following Saturday. Again a wonderful performance.

In between we did a lot of walking up the hills, and along the river. We scouted out several supermarkets in the area and settled on the Pingo Doce as our primary, though we’ll be using others, as well.

We discovered the B-MAD Art Deco museum and scheduled a tour for the following Monday. The museum will get its own album, though.

We discovered the Jardim Botânico Tropical and visited there — many beautiful flowers and trees, plus very active peacocks. It has its own album.

We found the LX Factory, a trendy little district in Alcântara. Lots of little restaurants — check out the artwork on the Cantina there.

Over the weekend our landlord’s son had his 7th birthday party in the back yard. It was great to hear these youngsters having such a great time. Our landlord sent up a slice of cake that their eldest had made, really great, as well as a huge lemon from the tree in the back yard.
